Curriculum and Instruction Overview

The goal of Danville Community School Corporation (DCSC) is to provide each student with a high quality core curriculum.
Every year we strive to ensure that each curricular area has identified standards for learning that guide classroom instruction and assessment and align to the Indiana Academic Standards.

These standards articulate the skills, knowledge and understandings we believe all students need in order to become educated citizens. Standards represent the essential understandings in the subject area discipline while ensuring continuity in the learning process as students progress from one course or grade level to another. Additionally, we continually use data from classroom and state assessments to drive our instruction and monitor student performance towards these standards. Programs are available at all levels to accommodate the needs and interests of advanced learners, those who need extra support to be successful, and all learners in-between.

Through a dynamic renewal process, the core curriculum of  DCSC is revised regularly to ensure that it is aligned with identified standards and designed to meet the needs of learners in the 21st Century. The curriculum offered accommodates different teaching styles as well as different learning styles.

We have a commitment to professional development for administrators and teachers to ensure that our support system is current and utilizes best practices for healthy, safe, engaged, and challenged students.

Student-Centered Teachers

We’re highly selective in the teachers we hire, and the number one quality we look for is being “student-centered.” This means putting the interests of our students at the forefront, understanding each student’s learning style and then adapting the curriculum to help each child master a given skill.

Curriculum

Our curriculum aligns with the Indiana Academic Standards.   Indiana Code 20-26-5-44.2 requires Indiana School Corporations to post reading curricula for students in grades K-5 as well as remedial programs utilized on their website each year.    Reading curriculum:

• First Grade: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading, Pathway to Fluency Science of Reading Curriculum  
• Second Grade: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading, Pathway to Fluency Science of Reading Curriculum    
• Third Grade: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading, Pathway to Fluency Science of Reading Curriculum    
• Fourth Grade: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading, Pathway to Fluency Science of Reading Curriculum    
• Fifth Grade: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading

Remedial instruction, referred to as Response to Intervention (RTI), is provided during the school day at designated times in each grade level, K-8. Students utilize the following programs:

• Guided Phonics and Beyond, Orton Gillingham (K-4)
• Writable English (5-8)

Title I

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires any Local Education Agency (LEA) that receives Title I assistance to make available to parents an annual report card. Please click here to view the Indiana Department of Education’s accountability data for Danville Community School Corporation.

The Indiana Department of Education requires us to place our Title I Schoolwide Plan on our district website.  This plan ensures we have the ability to provide academic services for students that qualify to utilize our Title I federal funding in a more precise manner. 

Staff Performance Evaluation Plan

Indiana Code (IC) 20-28-11.5-8(d) requires each school corporation to submit its entire staff performance evaluation plan to the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and requires IDOE to publish the plans on its website.  The IDOE asks that each school corporation post their current Staff Performance Evaluation Plan on their website.  Please see the link below to access our current plan.

Naturalization Examination

Each student enrolled in a U.S. Government course where credit is awarded for General, Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors, or Core 40 with Technical Honors designation is required to take the naturalization examination provided by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as administered by the student’s high school. U.S. Government courses include Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual credit, and Cambridge International courses. Students do not need to pass the naturalization examination in order to pass the U.S.Government course. Retests are not required or published in the results.

Indiana Code 20-30-5-7(d) requires, not later than November 1, 2022, and not later than November 1 each year thereafter, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to report student data from the naturalization examination to the Indiana General Assembly.  The school must also post results from the naturalization examination to the school’s website.

Our results are as follows for the 2022-2023 school year:

Fall

• Number of students who took the naturalization examination: 66
• Number of students who passed the naturalization examination by a score of not less than sixty percent (60%) on their first attempt: 61
• The pass rate of the naturalization examination among the students who participated: 92%

Spring

• Number of students who took the naturalization examination: 68
• Number of students who passed the naturalization examination with a score of not less than sixty percent (60%) on their first attempt: 53
• The pass rate of the naturalization examination among the students who participated: 78%

Our results are as follows for the 2023-2024 school year:

Fall

• Number of students who took the naturalization examination: 83
• Number of students who passed the naturalization examination by a score of not less than sixty percent (60%) on their first attempt: 74
• The pass rate of the naturalization examination among the students who participated: 89%

Spring

• Number of students who took the naturalization examination: 46
• Number of students who passed the naturalization examination by a score of not less than sixty percent (60%) on their first attempt: 44
• The pass rate of the naturalization examination among the students who participated: 96%

 

Dyslexia Information

The Indiana Department of Education requires each school corporation to include information regarding dyslexia on their website. The following information is from the 2022-2023 school year:

• The dyslexia intervention program(s) used during the previous school year to support students with dyslexia: Guided Phonics and Beyond, Orton Gillingham
• The number of students who received dyslexia intervention during the previous school year. This indicator represents the number of students who were identified as “at risk” or “at some risk” for dyslexia during the previous school year and who received the appropriate interventions. It does not represent the number of students who were officially diagnosed with dyslexia: 136
• The number of students identified with dyslexia during the previous school year. This indicator represents the number of students who were officially diagnosed with dyslexia and may differ from the number of students who received dyslexia intervention under the guidelines within this document: 0
